Repair, replace, or upgrade.
Repairs — often the cheaper fix.
Not every hot water fault needs a new unit. If your system is under about eight years old, the common culprits are a failed thermostat, heating element, tempering or pressure-relief valve, or (on gas) an igniter or thermocouple. These are repairable, often same-visit, and far cheaper than a full replacement. We carry common parts and will diagnose the actual fault before quoting — not just recommend a new unit by default.
Replacements — when it is time.
Once a system passes 10 to 12 years, is leaking from the tank, or is rusting, replacement is the smarter spend. A leaking tank does not get better, and a tank failure can flood a garage or laundry. We will tell you honestly when you have reached that point. Here is the 2026 NSW installed-price picture so you can plan:
- Electric storage: $900–$1,900
- Gas storage: $1,400–$3,000
- Continuous-flow (instant) gas: $1,500–$3,000
- Heat pump: $3,000–$6,000 before rebates (NSW average around $4,800; federal STCs often knock off $800–$1,000+)
Which type is right for your home?
It comes down to what you have connected and how the house lives. If you have natural gas, a continuous-flow gas unit gives you endless hot water and frees up space. If you are all-electric, a heat pump uses roughly 60 to 75 percent less power than old electric storage — typically $400 to $700 a year saved — and attracts STC rebates, though it needs airflow space and costs more up front. A big family on a tight budget might just want a like-for-like storage swap done today. We price the realistic options rather than pushing the dearest unit.
Brands we install and service.
We work across the major Australian brands — Rheem, Rinnai, Dux, Aquamax, Bosch, Vulcan, Thermann and Sanden among others. That means we can usually match or sensibly upgrade whatever you already have, and source parts fast for repairs.
Why we do not cut corners.
A hot water swap looks simple, but it carries real risk if done lazily: a missing or incorrectly set tempering valve can scald, an undersized relief drain can fail, and dodgy gas or electrical connections are dangerous. We install to AS/NZS 3500 (and AS/NZS 5601 for any gas work), fit the correct tempering valve, and issue a Certificate of Compliance. That protects your warranty and your family.
No hot water and a houseful of people? That is an emergency as far as we are concerned — call us. If your old unit failed because of a slow leak, it is worth checking the rest of your pipework while we are there. We cover Mayfield and the whole Hunter.
