Sewer smell in a Newcastle house: find the broken air seal.

Sewer odour is usually a trap, seal, vent or drain problem. The room, timing and weather pattern can narrow the fault before floors or walls are opened.

Safe checks first

A trap works only while it holds water.

Every basin, sink, shower and floor waste should retain a water seal that blocks sewer air. In a guest bathroom, old laundry or garage floor waste that is rarely used, the water can evaporate. Newcastle’s warm summer weather and a breeze through an open subfloor can accelerate that. Pour 1 to 2 litres of plain water slowly into each rarely used drain. If the smell disappears and stays away, refill that trap regularly.

Clean hair and organic film from removable grates and sink overflow openings. Check that a laundry hose enters its standpipe correctly and has not been pushed so far down that it disturbs the arrangement. Do not dismantle fixed pipework, remove a toilet, climb onto the roof to inspect a vent or pour caustic chemicals into the drain. Cleaner cannot repair a missing trap, failed toilet seal or split pipe.

A dry trap is the only common cause that should resolve fully with this simple test. If odour returns within 24 hours, the trap may be siphoning because of a vent problem, leaking beneath the fixture, or receiving pressure from a partial blockage. That requires diagnosis.

When it is urgent

Stop using fixtures and arrange urgent help when sewer smell comes with sewage at a floor waste, toilet water rising, several fixtures gurgling or an overflowing inspection opening. These are blockage signs, and continued water use can bring wastewater inside. Follow the blocked main drain diagnosis rather than treating each fixture separately.

A strong persistent smell that causes headache, nausea or dizziness also deserves immediate caution. Move people to fresh air and seek appropriate emergency help. Sewer odour should not be confused with fuel gas. If the smell resembles added gas odorant or is near a gas appliance, use the separate gas leak safety steps.

Match the symptom

Where and when it smells points to the next test.

Smell at the base of one toilet

A failed pan collar, seal or concealed connection is likely, especially if the pan rocks, the floor is damp or staining appears below. Do not keep tightening the pan to the floor. The toilet normally needs removal, inspection and resealing. An accessible reset often costs $350 to $800; damaged pipework, tiles or flooring add to that.

Smell plus gurgling after another fixture drains

This suggests pressure is disturbing water seals. A blocked vent, undersized or incorrect venting, or a partial downstream restriction can pull or push air through the nearest trap. AS/NZS 3500.2 sets sanitary drainage and venting requirements for exactly this reason. The test should include fixture operation under load and, where indicated, CCTV of the common drain.

Smell beneath a raised timber floor

Hamilton, Mayfield and inner-Newcastle cottages often have accessible subfloors, but they may also contain old cast iron, galvanised waste and mixed-era alterations. A split pipe, open disused branch or leaking joint can release odour without causing an obvious indoor overflow. Visual inspection and smoke testing are usually more targeted than opening an internal wall.

Smell after heavy rain

Repeated wet-weather odour can indicate a partial sewer blockage, low or defective inspection opening, cracked private drain in saturated soil, or an incorrect stormwater connection. Newcastle’s late-summer storm pattern can reveal a defect that stays quiet in dry weather. If fixtures also drain slowly, CCTV is the sensible next step. The storm-season plumbing checklist helps separate roof and stormwater symptoms from the sanitary sewer.

Smell near a hot water unit

Warm stagnant water at an untrapped relief drain can smell, but a true rotten-egg odour only from hot taps may relate to the stored water, anode chemistry or water stagnation rather than sewer gas. Compare a glass of cold water and hot water outdoors. Do not alter relief valves or raise storage temperature yourself. Arrange hot water assessment if the odour is carried in the water.

Diagnosis and 2026 pricing

Use the least invasive test that can prove the fault.

An initial normal-hours inspection and fixture test generally costs $180 to $400. Smoke testing commonly costs $350 to $700. Non-toxic test smoke is introduced under controlled conditions so it escapes at a failed seal, open branch or cracked pipe. The test area is managed carefully around occupants, pets and smoke alarms.

CCTV drainage inspection can bring diagnosis to $500 to $950, depending on access and whether cleaning is required first. A fixture trap or seal repair may cost $250 to $700, a toilet reset $350 to $800, and an accessible vent repair $500 to $1,500. Replacing a concealed broken drain or correcting extensive venting can range from $1,500 to $6,000 or more once access and surface repair are included.

A useful quote separates diagnosis from repair and credits clearly stated diagnostic charges if you proceed. Ask what hypothesis each test will confirm, whether CCTV or smoke files are supplied, who repairs wall or tile access, and whether GST and compliance paperwork are included. Licensed sanitary plumbing and drainage work must comply with the Plumbing Code of Australia and AS/NZS 3500. Alterations may require NSW notice, inspection and a Certificate of Compliance even when no development application is needed.

For a recurring dry trap, put a monthly refill reminder in place before summer. For wet-weather smells, book diagnosis during or soon after the conditions that trigger it, when evidence is strongest. Do not wait for a preferred season if sewage is present or several fixtures are backing up. The emergency plumbing service covers active overflows and unsafe sanitation problems.

Frequently asked

Sewer odour questions, answered by pattern.

Why does the house smell like sewer gas?
Common causes are a dry trap, failed toilet seal, vent fault, partial blockage or broken drain. Add 1 to 2 litres of water to unused floor wastes, then investigate if odour returns within 24 hours.
Is the smell dangerous?
A brief dry-trap smell is often simple, but strong persistent odour or sewage overflow needs prompt attention. Move outside if anyone develops headache, nausea or dizziness.
What does diagnosis cost?
An initial inspection commonly costs $180 to $400 in 2026. Smoke testing is often $350 to $700, while diagnosis with CCTV may total $500 to $950.
Why only after rain?
Rain can expose a partial blockage, low inspection opening, cracked pipe or incorrect drainage connection. A smell that returns after 2 or 3 heavy falls deserves CCTV and drainage checks.
Should I use drain cleaner?
No general cleaner can fix a failed seal, vent or pipe. Use 1 to 2 litres of plain water for a suspected dry trap and avoid caustic products if the smell remains.
